Mary Frances Doty Strain
Mary Frances Doty Strain, 86, formerly of Mulberry and Greencastle IN, died Thursday June 3rd in Heltonville Indiana .

Born February 20, 1924 to the farming family of Roy Christian and Laura Ethel Doty in Clinton Co. IN. She graduated from Mulberry High School in 1941, was active in 4-H, and received a Bachelor’s degree from Purdue University in 1944 in Special Sciences. She carried an Indiana Life License in teaching. She held positions in Centerville , Rossville, and Putnam County teaching English, civics and elementary education.

Mary Frances played the flute, sang in church and musicals, and always shared bouquets of her garden flowers. Her true passion was civic responsibility where her leadership skills and desire to empower others encompassed many areas. She served on several boards including the Election Board, Democratic Women’s Club, Greencastle Park Board, League of Women Voters, State and local NAACP, and Putnam County Play House. In 1978 she was appointed to the Greencastle City Council. In 1979 she received the Putnam County Extension Club’s “Jane Award” for volunteer activities that help the community.

She was a member of Gloria Dei/Grace Lutheran Church of Mulberry.

She is preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Irene Doty and Elizabeth Cofoid.

She is survived by four children, Susan Glaser of Denver Colorado , Francel Strain of Brownsburg IN, Justice St. Rain of Heltonville , IN , and Melodie Taylor presently in Central America . She has seven grand-children, eight great-grand-children and three great-great-grand children.

She will be laid to rest in Fairhaven Cemetery beside her sister and parents near Mulberry Indiana on Saturday.
