Robert J. Metzger
Robert J. Metzger, 83, of Albany, Oregon, died June 24, 2008 at the assited living unit at the Mennonite Village in Albany, where he had made his home for the past ten years.
Born April 11, 1925, he was the son of Arthur and Marie (Wagoner) Metzger, formerly of Cerro Gordo, IL and later from Camden, IN. He graduated from the Cerro Gordo High School and later from the University of Illinois. He received his PhD in Agriculture from Clemson University in Clemson, SC in 1954. He then became associated with the US department of Agriculture at the Oregon State College in Corvallis, Oregon. He remained there until his retirement in 1986.
During his association with the Department of Agriculture, he primarily did research on wheat. He traveled worldwide in connection with this and was instrumental in helping to substantially increase wheat yields in foreign countries, especially India. After his retirement he still spent many hours in the lab and fields pursuing this work.
In 1956 he married Barbara Hearing in Corvallis, Oregon and they had two children, who survive him. David R. (Laura), of Salem, Oregon and Debbie (Michael) Lee of Ames, Iowa. He also leaves behind four grandchildren Eric and Jeffrey Metzger and Matthew and Christopher Lee. Four sisters, Erma Metzger of Rossville, Lois (Duane) Meador of Pyrmont, Leora (Gilbert) Wagoner of Rossville, and Leona Selby of Pleasant Hill, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Velma Bean Zimmerman and a brother in law Elmer Selby. Shortly after his marriage he became associated with the First Methodist Church in Corvallis.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday July 1, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Bodine Funeral Home, Rossville, IN. Visitation will be from 9:00am until the time of service on Tuesday. Burial will take place at the Northfork Old German Baptist Brethren Cemetery.
